Ever wanted to try on hairy Hobbit feet or wield Frodo's sword? Fans of Peter Jackson's epic fantasy film series The Lord of the Rings will have the opportunity to bid on rare movie memorabilia, a Beverly Hills auction house said. Props from Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy will be up for sale at Julien's Auctions on December 5, including a pair of prosthetic hairy Hobbit feet worn by one of the film's main characters, Samwise Gamgee. The hairy feet are estimated to fetch between $15,000 and $30,000.

the Internet : Apple has 'big plans' for 2014, CEO Tim Cook says in memo

Apple CEO Tim Cook on Sunday sent a holiday email to employees, highlighting the main accomplishments of the company in 2013 -- and hinting at some surprises for next year, 9to5mac reports.
“We have a lot to look forward to in 2014,” Cook wrote in the leaked memo, “including some big plans that we think customers are going to love.” The top Apple exec did not elaborate on those “big plans,” but Apple is rumored to be working on several interesting projects for next year, including bigger iPhone models, a 12.9-inch iPad, a rumored smartwatch (possibly dubbed iWatch) and maybe even that Apple TV set (iTV) that keeps circling back every once in a while.

Culture : Monsters of Christmas past

I'm always nostalgic this time of year -- for big Italian holiday feasts, midnight mass at St. Monica's church, and punk rock.Let me explain.

The association between Christmas and punk rock started when I was 13, when my friends and I went to see a band play in the cafeteria of our high school. It was a punk rock band. A band called Shrapnel.

I was mesmerized. That night I fell for Shrapnel with the fervor only an 8th grade girl can summon. Down came my Shaun Cassidy poster and up went Shrapnel. I spent hours staring up at the lead singer, praying that somehow, someday I could know him.

Animals : A giant capybara named Gary

Finding an eight-stone rodent on the couch would see most people racing for the phone to dial pest control.

But it's a daily occurrence for Melanie Typaldos, 57 and her husband Richard Loveman, 54, who share their home in Buda, Texas, with a giant capybara named Gary.

Ms Typaldos adopted Gary after falling in love with the semi-aquatic mammals - the world's largest rodent - during a holiday in Venezuela, and she and her husband are so fond of their bizarre pet they even let him sleep in their bed.

Animals : Will we ever... talk to the animals?

“What’s that Flipper? The treasure is over there?” So went a typical plotline for the popular TV series featuring the cute, bottlenosed dolphin who could communicate with his human guardians, and who – in the time-honoured fashion – used his animal powers to apprehend criminals.

The idea that animals like Flipper can communicate with humans is not just the preserve of the small and big screen. History is littered with celebrity animals who have communicated with human scientists, with varying degrees of success. Many apes, including Washoe and Nim the chimps, and Kanzi the bonobo, have learned to communicate by using sign language or symbols on a keyboard. Alex, an African grey parrot learned over 100 English words, which he could use and combine appropriately; his poignant last words to Irene Pepperberg, his scientist handler, were “You be good. I love you. See you tomorrow."

Animals : Are humans still evolving?

Evolution is driven by reproduction, but is this still true for humans? As James May explains, we have been turning most of the process of natural selection on its head, but while some argue our comfort and safety has created a kind of evolutionary backwater, others argue that issues like our ability to digest the lactose in milk suggest we are still adapting to the world around us.

Auto&Moto : eep Cherokee, mud wrestler

It was Veterans’ Day in the US; Armistice Day in many other countries. As the vehicle that substantially replaced horses in World War II, the original Jeep established itself as an icon around the world.
My father’s First Cavalry Division rode into Vietnam’s Ia Drang Valley in Huey helicopters, not in Jeeps, but Dad did come home with one Jeep-germane battle story. Having retrieved a newly arrived soldier from the airfield in one of the vehicles, he eventually came under fire. The soldier, in his fright, emptied his entire rifle clip inside the Jeep, effectively blowing the canvas passenger-side door to bits.
